NEW YORK (AP) -Washington Redskins safety LaRon Landry and Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey were fined one game check each Monday by the NFL for unnecessary roughness for hits with the helmet.
Landry was fined $16,764 for roughing the passer, specifically making helmet-to-helmet contact with New York Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens on Sunday.
Ramsey was fined $21,176 for spearing Dallas Cowboys running back Julius Jones in a Sunday night game.
Landry previously was fined $7,500 for two unnecessary roughness violations on Oct. 21 against Arizona. Ramsey was fined $5,000 on Oct. 14 for roughing the passer against the Jets.
NFL director of football operations Gene Washington issued the fines, citing the rule that says:
`` using any part of a player?s helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/hairline? parts) or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily; although such violent or unnecessary use of the helmet is impermissible against any opponent, game officials will give special attention in administering this rule to protect those players who are in virtually defenseless postures.''
Washington emphasized to both players that future infractions of this type can lead to increased disciplinary action up to and including a suspension.
