FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) – A lawyer for former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez has urged a judge to move Hernandez’s trial in the killing of a semi-professional football player to a different Massachusetts county.
Hernandez is charged in the 2013 fatal shooting of Odin Lloyd, who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiance.
On Thursday, Hernandez’s lawyer told a judge that media coverage of the case has been sensational and has ”poisoned” the jury pool in Bristol County against Hernandez. He cited two defense-commissioned public opinion polls in which more than half the respondents said they believe Hernandez is definitely or probably guilty in Lloyd’s killing.
Prosecutors are expected to argue against the change of venue later Thursday.
Hernandez, a former tight end for the Patriots, faces separate charges in Suffolk County in the 2012 killings of two Boston men.
