BEREA, Ohio (AP) – Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer says he’s never felt worse after a loss in his career and understands that criticism ”comes with the territory.”
Hoyer played poorly in Sunday’s 24-6 loss at Jacksonville, completing just 16 of 41 passes. His shaky performance sparked buzz among some fans and analysts that popular rookie backup Johnny Manziel should take over, but Browns coach Mike Pettine said the team is ”firmly” behind Hoyer.
Hoyer appreciates the support and trusts Pettine. Hoyer says he was difficult to be around the past few days and joked even his wife didn’t want to be near him.
Hoyer’s teammates are confident he’ll rebound this week against winless Oakland. Wide receiver Miles Austin said it was unfair for Hoyer to be the main target for criticism, saying, ”to put a loss on any one individual is absolutely crazy.”
