FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) – The New York Jets are placing Darrelle Revis on season-ending injured reserve, a few weeks after Rex Ryan said the team would wait until after surgery in case the star cornerback could return in time to play in the Super Bowl.
Ryan says Friday that Revis will have surgery next week to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered almost three weeks ago at Miami. With safety Eric Smith being sidelined by a knee injury this week, Ryan says the Jets need the roster spot that was being occupied by Revis.
New York is expected to make the move official later Friday or Saturday, and fill Revis’ spot with a safety – possibly rookie Antonio Allen, the team’s seventh-round draft pick currently on the practice squad.
