It was a rough Sunday for quarterbacks and wide receivers, with Green Bay ‘s Aaron Rodgers sustaining a concussion and Rams wideout Mark Clayton damaging his right knee.
Also hurt were Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski and Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, both with shoulder injuries. Browns quarterback Seneca Wallace injured his right leg.
Rodgers got a concussion late in Green Bay’s 16-13 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins, one of several injuries for the Packers. He did not miss any action but was slow to get up off the field after Green Bay’s last offensive play, when he was intercepted by LaRon Landry.
Asked on which hit Rodgers sustained the concussion, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said: “I think it was the one at the end of the game.”
Other Packers hurt Sunday: linebacker Clay Matthews strained his left hamstring; tight end Donald Lee hurt his shoulder; tight end Jermichael Finley was carted off the field with a bad knee after Green Bay’s second offensive play and will have medical tests Monday; defensive lineman Ryan Pickett left two plays later with a sprained ankle; and safety Derrick Martin sprained a knee.
“The two injuries to our tight ends took us out of some packages,” McCarthy said.
Redskins starting left tackle Trent Williams hurt his left knee on the final play of the fourth quarter, when his knee buckled under him during a runback of an interception. He said his knee “just kind of gave out” and called it “real painful.”
After being attended to on the field, Williams walked off under his own power. He briefly returned on Washington’s first possession of overtime, then again departed.
The rookie missed two games earlier this season with injuries to his left knee and a left toe.
Gradkowski made a surprise, brief return at the start of the second half after being knocked out of the game. He was hit hard by San Diego’s Shaun Phillips on a pass play in the final minute of the first quarter. Gradkowski went to the locker room and was replaced by former starter Jason Campbell. The Raiders originally said Gradkowski would not return but he came out to start the second half. He threw two incompletions on one drive and then was replaced again by Campbell.
Jake Delhomme came in late in the second quarter to replace Wallace, who was making his fourth straight start for Delhomme. Wallace was hurt when he was sacked by Falcons defensive end Jonathan Abraham. Wallace hopped off the field on his left foot before being evaluated by Cleveland’s training staff. He walked gingerly in the locker room after the 20-10 loss.
Clayton left the Rams’ 44-6 loss at Detroit in the first quarter. Clayton fell to the ground while running a deep pass pattern along the left sideline and stayed down until he was carted off the field.
Afterward, he was on crutches with a brace coming out of the locker room.
“It doesn’t look good,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “We’ll know more tomorrow, but they said it had something to do with the patella. We’re not optimistic.”
Detroit’s Johnson sat out the final few minutes after hurting his right shoulder making a diving catch near the sideline. Johnson said afterward the shoulder was sore before heading quickly to the training room.
After coming out of the game, he had his jersey removed on the sideline before the shoulder was wrapped in ice. The ice wrap was gone by the time Johnson spoke briefly to reporters in the locker room.
Lions coach Jim Schwartz said only that Johnson “landed funny” on the play.
Colts running back Joseph Addai left Sunday’s win over Kansas City with a shoulder injury. The Colts would not say which shoulder was injured.
Addai was hurt on a carry late in the third quarter. Chiefs defensive end Glenn Dorsey tackled Addai, and momentum drove Addai’s head and shoulder into the ground.
Tampa Bay lost center Jeff Faine, who was helped off the field at Cincinnati and was unable to put much weight on his right leg. His hurt his thigh.
Bucs safety Sean Jones hurt his back in the first quarter.
Broncos first-round draft pick Demaryius Thomas fumbled a kickoff when hit by Jason Phillips, a collision that forced Thomas from the game with head and neck injuries.
Bears linebacker Lance Briggs went out in the second half of a win at Carolina with an ankle injury.
Texans RG Mike Brisiel left in the second quarter with a sprained knee, and Chiefs LT Branden Albert hurt his left elbow in the first half at Indianapolis.
