WASHINGTON (AP) – The NFL and its players’ union have talked about a change to an 18-game regular season at a bargaining session.
The two sides are issuing a joint statement about Tuesday’s meetings, saying that negotiations “focused on several matters,” including a rookie wage scale and improvements for retired players.
League owners and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell want to expand the regular season from 16 games to 18, and cut the preseason from four games to two. Colts President Bill Polian said Monday he thinks such a switch is a “fait accompli,” although the union has not said it wants to make a change.
The current collective bargaining agreement expires in March, and union head DeMaurice Smith has said he believes owners are preparing for a lockout.
