METAIRIE, La. (AP) -NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has decided against enforcing four-game suspensions of New Orleans Saints defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant at this time.
Goodell says it would be unfair to suspend the two Saints players now when the league has been blocked from suspending Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams for the same offense while their case is pending in Minnesota state court.
The players tested positive last season for bumetanide, a banned diuretic that can be used to mask steroids.
After the NFL Players Association sued to block the suspensions, a federal court sided on most issues with the league, but referred the case to state court in Minnesota because of that state’s labor laws.
