ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -Veteran Detroit Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper says he accepts coach Jim Schwartz’s decision to have him back up No. 1 draft pick Matthew Stafford.
Culpepper and Stafford competed through training camp before Schwartz announced Monday that Stafford would start Sunday’s season opener at New Orleans.
The 32-year-old Culpepper issued a statement Tuesday saying Schwartz gave him “a fair opportunity to compete for the starting job.” He says he will help Stafford in any way he can.
Culpepper came out of retirement midway through last season after making 11 lackluster appearances in two seasons for Oakland and Miami. He started five games for Detroit on the Lions’ way to an unprecedented 0-16 season.
