PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Steelers knew for months that Ben Roethlisberger would be missing when the season began. The reality of his four-game suspension struck them as they reported for practice this week and found his No. 7 locker vacant.
Roethlisberger’s absence is creating an awkward, unenviable situation that is forcing the Steelers to adopt a late-season, win-or-else mentality in September.
Get off to a terrible start, and the Steelers might not be able to recover in a division where the Ravens and Bengals look to be improved.
Should they thrive with the playmaking Dennis Dixon at quarterback, Roethlisberger’s missteps might be largely ignored within a relatively short time. No doubt Roethlisberger would prefer that.
