FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -Along with their new quarterback, the New York Jets now have a new training facility.
The team officially opened a new practice center in Florham Park on Tuesday, finalizing a move from Long Island, where they’d held practice for 40 seasons.
“This is a monumental day for the New York Jets,” said team owner Woody Johnson. “We’ve had an amazing offseason, we’ve had an amazing draft – I think you know the players we’ve picked up.”
The new site will be home to players including quarterback Brett Favre, who was obtained last month in a trade with the Green Bay Packers.
The team settled on Florham Park after a search that included more than 40 sites. The new facility, finished six months ahead of schedule, is not far from the Meadowlands, where the team plays.
“This is a spot that is the most beautiful … it’s going to be the most productive training facility of its kind in the world,” Johnson said.
Johnson noted the team’s symbolic and financial commitment to New Jersey, and praised Gov. Jon Corzine for promoting a business climate that could make such a deal happen.
“What a place! I think I’m about ready to do ‘J-E-T-S!”’ Corzine said, referring to fans’ chants at Jets home games.
Corzine later gave Johnson an oversize sign for New Jersey Turnpike Interchange 16W, the exit for the new stadium.
The Jets and New York Giants are jointly building a new stadium in the Meadowlands, and are asking fans to help pay for it through the imposition of personal seat licenses, a one-time fee giving fans the right to buy seats in the new stadium.
The Giants are charging PSL fees for all seats; the Jets are exempting those in the upper deck.
