PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Only a handful of protesters greeted Michael Vick’s return to the NFL as Philadelphia animal lovers held their own event across town.
Three women held a sign outside Lincoln Financial Field that said, “Murderers are not role models,” referring to Vick’s role in leading a dogfighting ring.
But others wore Vick jerseys and defended the quarterback, saying he had been punished for his crime and deserved a second chance.
Vick made his debut with the Philadelphia Eagles to a rousing ovation from the crowd on Thursday night in a preseason game against Jacksonville. The quarterback signed with the team after serving 18 months in prison for the dogfighting conviction.
Animal welfare officials hosted an event to encourage adoption of pit bulls rescued from dogfighting rings.
