HOUSTON (AP) -The Texans placed Harry Williams on injured reserve Sunday after he suffered a severe neck injury in Friday’s preseason game against Dallas.
Houston also re-signed fullback Jon Abbate on Sunday. The 26-year-old Williams was hurt in a collision with a teammate while trying to make a tackle on a kick return. He had surgery on Sunday in Dallas and the Texans said they would update his condition on Monday.
Abbate, 23, signed with Houston as an undrafted free agent in May 2007. He spent last season on injured reserve after breaking his right ankle in an exhibition game. The Texans re-signed him in February and cut him in July before bringing him back to take Williams’ roster spot.
The Texans held a non-contact, conditioning workout on Sunday and running back Ahman Green participated. Green has hardly practiced since straining his groin in Houston’s first preseason game on Aug. 9.
Running back Chris Brown did not participate in the drills because of a sore back that’s lingered since the start of training camp. Coach Gary Kubiak said Brown was “day to day” and he didn’t expect either Green or Brown to play in Thursday’s preseason finale against Tampa Bay.
Rookie Steve Slaton, who rushed 10 times for 44 yards in Friday’s game, also skipped Sunday’s workout with turf toe.
