CLEVELAND (AP) -Browns quarterback Derek Anderson will start Cleveland’s home exhibition opener against Detroit, a secret coach Eric Mangini kept up until less than an hour before kickoff.
Anderson, competing with Brady Quinn for the starting job, came off the bench last week in Green Bay. It was assumed Anderson would start, but Mangini refused to divulge his starter this week. He has also not given any timetable for naming his starter before the Browns’ season opener on Sept. 13 against Minnesota.
Also, Cleveland was without Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers, linebacker David Bowens, running back Jerome Harrison and wide receiver David Patten. All have unspecified injuries.
