BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) -The Chicago Bears could get quarterback Matt Gutierrez onto the playing field against the Oakland Raiders Saturday after only a few days of work with the offense.
Gutierrez signed Wednesday as an extra quarterback after backup Caleb Hanie was sidelined because of a shoulder injury. Gutierrez has played briefly for New England and Kansas City.
Hanie is expected to be out almost all of the preseason, and the Bears remain confident he can be their backup to starter Jay Cutler.
Coach Lovie Smith anticipates Gutierrez learning enough of the offense that he might see a little action against the Raiders. Gutierrez will battle with rookie Dan LeFevour for the third quarterback slot.
