NEW ORLEANS (AP) -The New Orleans Saints have signed former Redskins running back Ladell Betts to a one-year deal.
The 30-year-old Betts, working his way back from major knee surgery last fall, did not wear pads or participate in team drills Tuesday morning. Coach Sean Payton says Betts will not play in the preseason game against Houston on Saturday night in the Superdome.
Betts, a nine-year veteran, joins second-year player P.J. Hill and rookie free agent Chris Ivory in the race to be the third halfback behind Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas. New Orleans went searching for a veteran running back when Lynell Hamilton suffered a season-ending knee injury last week.
