ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -The New York Giants placed offensive tackle Shane Olivea on season-ending injured reserve with a back injury Thursday and waived defensive end Antonio Reynolds.
The Giants took a gamble on Olivea last month, signing the four-year veteran just days before training camp and days after he finished a rehabilitation stint at the Betty Ford Center in California for an addiction to pain killers.
Olivea admitted he played while addicted last season with the San Diego Chargers. He lost his starting job midway through last season and was released after the season ended.
Olivea looked good early in training camp and seemed to have a shot at making the team until hurting his back a week into training camp. He never returned to practice.
“It was very unfortunate, because we thought when we first brought Shane in this would be something where both parties would benefit,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “We had a veteran football player, a guy who had gone through some things, and was anxious to really start his career over.”
Olivea started 57 of 60 games in his four seasons with the Chargers.
Reynolds signed Sunday, but was soon sidelined with a hamstring injury.
