METAIRIE, La. (AP) -Veteran linebackers Derrick Brooks and Derek Smith impressed Saints coaches during his workout Wednesday afternoon.
The club brought the two linebackers in for a look following Mark Simoneau’s torn triceps injury, which will require surgery. Head coach Sean Payton says the Saints intend to wait until after Friday night’s preseason opener against Cincinnati before they decide whether to sign either Brooks or Smith.
Brooks is a 14-year veteran who was named to 11 Pro Bowls. He has played his entire career for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who released him last winter.
Smith has played for 12 years. Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was highly complimentary of his workout as well.
