FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -Derrick Burgess is happy to be with the successful New England Patriots after spending the past four years with the Oakland Raiders.
The strong pass rusher practiced with his new team for the first time Sunday, three days after he was traded for undisclosed draft picks. The defensive end, who will move to linebacker in the Patriots’ 3-4 defense, had held out of Oakland’s training camp hoping to be traded.
He said he was shocked and glad when he got a phone call on Thursday telling him about the trade.
While his teammates had Saturday off, Burgess worked and studied the Patriots’ defensive system. He made the Pro Bowl after the 2005 and 2006 seasons when he totaled 27 sacks. But he had just 3 1/2 in an injury-plagued 2008 season.
