FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -Derrick Burgess is joining the Patriots just in time for their first day off of a busy training camp.
New England obtained the pass rusher from the Oakland Raiders on Thursday in a trade for undisclosed draft choices. Burgess was on his way to Foxborough while the team practiced Friday morning. It was the Patriots’ last practice until Sunday afternoon.
They had double sessions for the first eight days of camp and were scheduled for two more on Friday before coach Bill Belichick canceled the afternoon session.
Burgess had 38 1/2 sacks in four seasons with Oakland and made the Pro Bowl twice. Belichick said Burgess can contribute in more ways than as just a pass rusher.
