REDMOND, Wash. (AP) -Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon pleaded guilty Monday to negligent driving and was sentenced to 40 hours of community service, a $350 fine and drug and alcohol awareness classes.
King County District Court Judge David Steiner suspended a maximum sentence of 90 days in jail and $650 of his maxiumum $1,000 fine, as long as Moon completes the community service, said Dan Donohoe, a spokesman for the King County prosecutor's office.
Steiner also required that Moon meet with a panel of people injured by a drunk driver.
Moon was not charged with drunken driving because he tested below the legal limit for alcohol in the hours after his arrest for investigation of driving while intoxicated on April 6, Donohoe said.
According to charging papers, a Washington State Patrol trooper stopped Moon's SUV in downtown Kirkland at about 2 a.m. for traveling an estimated 15 miles over the 35 mph speed limit.
The trooper reported smelling ``a very strong odor of intoxicants coming from the vehicle'' and said Moon was driving with two female passengers ``who appeared to be extremely intoxicated ... (Moon) had bloodshot and watery eyes and a pale glossy face.'' The officer reported Moon acknowledged having ``about four beers throughout the evening.''
Moon, 50, starred for most of his NFL career with the Houston Oilers and played briefly for the Seattle Seahawks, for whom he is currently the analyst on radio broadcasts. He was the MVP of Washington's 1978 Rose Bowl win was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame last summer.
