AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Johnny Manziel is back on campus.
More than 20,000 fans came to InfoCision Stadium at the University of Akron on Saturday to see Manziel and Brian Hoyer continue their competition for Cleveland's starting quarterback job.
The setting was a familiar one for Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner who electrified crowds with sensational plays during two seasons at Texas A&M.
Manziel worked only with Cleveland's second-string offense during the early portion of the scrimmage. He made a nice 14-yard throw on fourth down to fellow rookie Willie Snead for a first down. Manziel had an apparent touchdown pass dropped by Charles Johnson in the end zone.
Earlier this week, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said the competition remains close and the coaching staff was waiting for one of the QBs to ''take off.''
