HOUSTON (AP) -The Houston Texans’ young cornerbacks face a demanding learning curve at training camp.
Rookie Kareem Jackson and second-year pro Glover Quin are the front-runners to start ahead of more experienced veterans.
If they secure the No. 1 spots, they’ll take on difficult challenges as soon as the season begins – Houston plays Indianapolis and Dallas, two of the league’s top passing offenses, in two of the first three weeks.
The Texans ranked 18th in pass defense (218 yards per game) and 20th in interceptions (14) in 2009. Quin started 12 games as a rookie and led the team with 11 passes defensed.
Houston used its first-round pick on Jackson to replace Dunta Robinson, who signed with Atlanta.
Receiver Andre Johnson got by Jackson on a deep route in Sunday’s workout, and coach Gary Kubiak snapped at Quin for missing an assignment on another play.
But secondary coach David Gibbs said Quin and Jackson will only benefit from lining up in every practice against the All-Pro Johnson.
