MANKATO, Minn. (AP) -Minnesota Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said Friday that he has not yet started thinking about offering a contract extension to coach Brad Childress.
Childress is in the third year of a five-year deal and coming off a division championship-winning season last year. In theory, that makes this season a big one because owners typically do not have coaches work with just one year remaining.
But Wilf said he doesn’t necessarily think this is a make or break year for the first coach he has hired.
“We never make any preconditions on how the season should turn out or what conditions would be necessary,” Wilf said. “We’re very happy with our coach and the coaching staff and the players. We’re very excited for this year. That doesn’t ever come into my mind.”
He also declined to say when he might consider offering an extension.
e some tough competition as you all know and every game last year was a tough one. We want to make sure that we get better and we improve and we stay ahead of the competition. That’s all we can expect.”
Wilf also said the Vikings will not revisit adding Brett Favre and continue to work on a plan for a new stadium on the site of the Metrodome. He feels that he is getting a warmer reception from state lawmakers who have been reluctant to discuss using tax dollars to help finance a new facility.
“I think we’ve all come to the conclusion that the current Metrodome site is the right place to be,” Wilf said. “It has the infrastructure, the fans want it there, the people want it there, the corporate leaders want it there. It’s central to the whole planning of Downtown East. It’s something that’s needed right now in today’s economy.”
Sen. Amy Klobuchar paid a visit to training camp as well with her father, Jim, a former newspaper reporter who covered the Vikings’ first training camp in 1961.
“I’m hoping it gets resolved on the state basis,” Amy Klobuchar said. “We already have a Twins stadium and the Gophers, so hopefully something can get worked out.”
