KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -At the unveiling of a 9-foot statue of Lamar Hunt, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the founder of the AFL and Kansas City Chiefs was a humble visionary who helped shape the modern game.
The statue was unveiled Friday at the Founder’s Plaza on the north side of the renovated Arrowhead Stadium.
Hunt was the 27-year-old son of oil billionaire H.L. Hunt when he talked several other wealthy men into forming the AFL and challenging the National Football League. He had been rebuffed several times in an effort to buy an NFL team, so he decided to form his own league.
After a rocky beginning, the AFL became a huge success and eventually forced a merger with the NFL.
Hunt died on Dec. 13, 2006.
