DENVER (AP) -The Denver Broncos were looking for bulk when they acquired Sam Adams, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 350 pounds. The team didn't get all of what it may have been expecting.
``Actually, I'm at 345,'' corrected Adams when he reported to the Broncos on Tuesday. ``I'm down from last year.''
Later he added: ``I really don't see what difference it makes. I've been to the Pro Bowl at 355 pounds and I've been to the Pro Bowl at 335.''
Adams signed Monday with the Broncos, becoming one of the biggest players to play for the team. Coach Mike Shanahan said he couldn't remember anyone heavier in his tenure with Denver.
``We all know history and you can see he has great quickness for a guy that size,'' Shanahan said. ``Any time you have that quickness and that size, usually good things happen.''
Adams begins his 14th year in the NFL after a season with the Cincinnati Bengals. He is a three-time Pro Bowl selection and played for Buffalo (2003-05), Oakland (2002), Baltimore (2000-01) and Seattle (1994-99) before last year.
Adams' 44 career sacks (297 yards.) rank as the fourth-highest among active NFL defensive tackles. He was a starter on defenses that ranked among the NFL's top 10 against the run for five consecutive seasons from 2000-04 as a member of the Ravens, Raiders and Bills.
``Wherever I go, I produce,'' Adams said. ``Wherever I go, I'm going to go to the Pro Bowl.''
Last year, as a 16-game starter for the Bengals, he had 25 tackles, 12 solo, and two sacks. He had minor surgery shortly after the season on his right knee and was released by the Bengals.
Being cut didn't bother him.
``Cincinnati let me go because they chose to go another direction,'' Adams said. ``I knew I would be somewhere, but actually, I got somewhere pretty quick.''
M.
``Sam has uniqueness as far as his quickness,'' Bates said. ``His first step is as fast as any big man in football.''
