METAIRIE, La. (AP) -New Orleans Saints first-round draft pick Robert Meachem needed his right knee examined after he missed practices Sunday and Monday.
Coach Sean Payton said after Monday’s practice the Saints knew about a possible minor meniscus problem before they drafted the former standout receiver at Tennessee with the 27th overall pick.
“After his exam, I’ll know a little bit more, but it started to get to the point where it was hampering him,” Payton said. “We just backed him off yesterday and the same way this morning.”
Meachem also missed portions of rookie camp the weekend after the draft when he sprained his left ankle.
In 2003, Meachem had arthroscopic surgery on the same knee to repair his meniscus, then took a medical redshirt year, putting his career with the Volunteers on hold until 2004.
Meachem was not in the locker room when reporters were allowed to talk with players Monday afternoon. A team spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking an update on Meachem’s knee examination.
Saints special teams standout Steve Gleason also missed Monday’s practice and was scheduled for arthroscopic surgery Tuesday on his right knee.
Gleason’s participation in last weekend’s minicamp was limited and he wore a brace on the injured knee when he was on the field.
