AKRON, Ohio (AP) -Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson, the second-leading scorer in franchise history, was one of several veterans who skipped the first day of the team’s “voluntary” workouts.
Browns general manager Tom Heckert would not say if Dawson’s absence Monday was because of a contract dispute. Dawson has been with the team since its expansion return in 1999. He has been seeking a new contract for several years and has one season left on his deal.
Dawson missed five games last season with a calf injury.
The Browns began their second season of “OTAs” under coach Eric Mangini without Dawson and five restricted free agents: running back Jerome Harrison, fullback Lawrence Vickers, linebacker Matt Roth, safety Abram Elam and linebacker D’Qwell Jackson.
