NEW YORK (AP) -NFL assistant coaches are considering unionizing because they feel team owners have stripped them of benefits.
NFL Coaches Association executive director Larry Kennan, a former assistant coach, says a letter was sent to the organization’s representatives on all 32 teams urging them to “explore the possibility” of unionizing. By doing so, the assistant coaches could gain negotiating rights they do not have as an association.
ESPN.com first reported on the letter.
NFL owners unilaterally changed health care, pensions and early retirement provisions last year.
Kennan says each head coach also has received the letter “so they wouldn’t be blind-sided.”
