MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -The NFL is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a court ruling that allowed Minnesota Vikings defensive linemen Kevin and Pat Williams to challenge their suspensions.
Spokesman Greg Aiello says the league filed the appeal on Thursday. The league cites the National Labor Relations Act in arguing that its collective bargaining agreement protects its drug policy from lawsuits in state courts.
The Williamses tested positive in 2008 for a banned diuretic. They sued to block their four-game suspensions, and the NFL wants the Supreme Court to overturn a federal judge’s decision last year that sent the case to state court.
Last week, a state judge ruled the league could proceed with four-game suspensions.
The NFL’s decision was first reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
