CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The Carolina Panthers have spent the NFL draft shedding old philosophies.
They once thought they could get by with a game manager at quarterback. That changed when they gambled on Auburn QB Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick.
They opened the final day of the draft Saturday by taking West Virginia cornerback Brandon Hogan in the fourth round, a player with the type of checkered past they once would have avoided.
Hogan served a suspension last season following a drunken-driving arrest, one of several legal issues during his college stint. He then tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the final regular-season game and missed the Mountaineers’ bowl appearance.
Hogan says he won’t be able to run until August as he recovers.
