DAVIE, Fla. (AP) – The Miami Dolphins’ newest wide receiver is so fast he can make up for lost time.
Edmond Gates quit football for six years before walking on at Abilene Christian. In four seasons he caught 27 touchdown passes and the Dolphins’ eye, prompting Miami to take him Saturday in the fourth round of the draft.
Gates ran the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds at the NFL scouting combine and said the time was his slowest ever. His best? 4.21.
The Dolphins need speed. They tied for last in the NFL with only two scoring drives lasting less than four plays. They had just six TD catches of at least 20 yards.
The Dolphins drafted another passing target in the sixth round in versatile Charles Clay, who played both fullback and tight end at Tulsa.
