DENVER (AP) -The mother of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams will address a judge before the man convicted of killing her son is sentenced to life in prison.
A jury last month convicted Willie Clark of first-degree murder in Williams’ death on New Year’s Day 2007. The drive-by shooting happened after both men left the same nightclub where there was an altercation.
Rosalind Williams and seven other people are scheduled to speak at a sentencing hearing Friday afternoon. A first-degree murder conviction in Colorado carries a mandatory life sentence.
he lunch break in the meantime.
Prosecutors oppose Clark’s request.
“Frankly, I think he’s denying the victims their opportunity to have their day in court,” said prosecutor Tim Twining. Clark’s attorney, Darren Cantor, argues that his client has a right to choose whether to attend key hearings.
Clark also was convicted of attempted murder and assault charges in the shooting that injured two others.
Witnesses testified that Clark hopped into an SUV to catch up with a limousine carrying Williams after the altercation at the club. Clark has maintained his innocence, and his defense attorneys sought to pin the blame on a man in a separate SUV.
