PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The New England Patriots could find themselves defending a lawsuit by NFL fans miffed about their secret videotaping of signals by New York Jets coaches.
The NFL bans such videotaping and issued $750,000 in fines against the Patriots and coach Bill Belichick (BEHL’-ih-chik) after a 2007 game at Giants Stadium.
A Jets ticket holder says defrauded fans paid to see rigged games. New Jersey lawyer Carl Mayer is seeking $185 million in damages for Jets fans. He wants to learn the extent of the videotaping, dubbed Spygate.
An NFL lawyer says the team violated only league rules – not any civil or criminal laws.
e hopes the U.S. appeals panel that heard arguments Wednesday in Philadelphia will revive it.
The judges didn’t indicate when they’ll rule.
