CINCINNATI (AP) -The Bengals are moving quickly to replace departed receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, reaching preliminary agreement on a contract with former Jets receiver Laveranues Coles.
The deal hadn’t been completed as of late Wednesday afternoon, according to a person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn’t made an announcement. ESPN reported that the sides were working on a four-year deal.
Earlier in the day, coach Marvin Lewis indicated that the signing could be “imminent.”
Houshmandzadeh left for the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, costing the Bengals their top receiver. They want to replace him with Coles, a 31-year-old receiver who was released by the Jets a week ago. He caught 70 passes last season.
