NEW ORLEANS (AP) – New England Patriots running back Kevin Faulk passed a drug test this week after he was cited for marijuana possession while going into a concert, his agent said Friday.
Four marijuana cigarettes were found in Faulk’s jacket last week as the former LSU star entered the Cajundome to see rapper Lil’ Wayne. The citation was for simple possession, a misdemeanor, said Capt. John Babin of the Lafayette Metro Narcotics Task Force.
“As soon as he got back to Boston, Kevin went to coach Belichick and explained what happened,” agent Raymond Brothers said. “Belichick told him to take the test and clear it up and that’s what he did.”
Brothers said his client took the test Monday in Rhode Island and it came back clean Thursday. Brothers sent a copy of a document – labeled “Controlled Substance Test Report” by drug-screening company ChoicePoint – to The Associated Press on Friday.
Brothers refused to say how Faulk got the marijuana.
“He does want to apologize to the kids and his fans and wants them to know that this is not the example they should follow,” the agent said.
Faulk was a captain last season for the first time in his nine years with the Patriots. He had 47 catches for 383 yards and one touchdown, the game-winner in a 24-20 victory over Indianapolis on Nov. 4. He’s the team’s all-time leader in receptions by a running back with 323.
Faulk also had 62 rushes for 265 yards in the Patriots’ 18-1 season, which ended with a 17-14 loss in the Super Bowl to the New York Giants.
He made big plays in two of the Patriots’ Super Bowl wins. His 2-point conversion reception gave the Patriots a 29-22 lead in their 32-29 Super Bowl win over Carolina in the 2003 season. The next year, he made a 12-yard catch to Philadelphia’s 2-yard line that set up the Patriots’ third touchdown in a 24-21 Super Bowl win.
