ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -The Oakland Raiders have placed the exclusive franchise tag on defensive lineman Richard Seymour.
The team executed the move before a deadline Thursday. By designating him as the exclusive franchise player, Seymour is unable even to negotiate with other teams.
Seymour will be guaranteed a salary for next season of at least $12.398 million. If the average of the top five salaries at defensive end for 2010 as of April 15 is greater than that, Seymour will get the new amount. Oakland would like to sign Seymour to a long-term deal if possible.
The last time the Raiders used the franchise tag was in 2008 for cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
