INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Don’t expect the Indianapolis Colts to keep middle linebacker Gary Brackett around with the franchise tag though they’d still like him back.
Colts president Bill Polian told The Associated Press that Indy hopes to complete a new deal with their defensive captain before free agency opens March 5. But he said it was unlikely the Colts would use the franchise tag.
Brackett has been the Colts starter for the past five seasons and is a critical piece to the defense because he makes all of the calls.
Using the franchise tag would cost the Colts about $9.7 million. Polian did not rule out the possibility of using the transition tag, which would assure Brackett of a salary that would be nearly $8.4 million next season.
