DETROIT (AP) – The Detroit Lions must forfeit their seventh-round pick in this year’s draft after Commissioner Roger Goodell ruled they tampered with players under contract to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010.
Detroit must also swap fifth-round picks with Kansas City, leaving the Lions with the 23rd pick of that round instead of the ninth.
The league says the Lions commented publicly to the media about their desire to acquire players under contract with the Chiefs and had impermissible contact with a player – or his agent – under contract with the Chiefs.
The league did not identify the players involved.
Either team can appeal the decision. The Lions didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
