FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Todd Weiner announced his retirement Thursday after an 11-year NFL career.
The 33-year-old Weiner spent the past seven seasons with the Falcons after starting out with the Seattle Seahawks, who picked him in the second round of the 1998 draft from Kansas State.
Weiner started 118 of 152 games during his career, including 11 this past season while battling a knee injury. He was forced to step in after first-round pick Sam Baker underwent back surgery.
``Todd Weiner epitomizes toughness, grit and everything a championship caliber football player should be,'' Falcons coach Mike Smith said. ``As good of a player as Todd was for the Falcons, he was an even better person in our community through a variety of highly publicized charitable endeavors working with children. He will be sorely missed by our football team on and off the field, but one thing is for certain - Todd will always be a Falcon.''
prisingly making the playoffs with an 11-5 mark.
``The Falcons are a first-class organization and due to the positive experiences my family and I have had here in Atlanta, we will continue to live and be active members of this community,'' Weiner said in a statement.
