MIAMI (AP) -The longtime model for winning NFL championships may be headed the way of leather helmets.
The NFL’s common coaching mantra is to run the ball, control the clock and rely on good defense. But the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints won this season with the pass, and they’ll meet in the Super Bowl on Sunday.
The Saints’ Drew Brees set an NFL record with his completion percentage of 70.6, and the Colts’ Peyton Manning ranked second at 68.8. Indianapolis will play for the title despite ranking a distant last in rushing.
NFL draft consultant Gil Brandt says the notion of keeping the ball on the ground to win is out of vogue. He predicts teams will pass even more next season.
