WASHINGTON (AP) – About 30 current and former NFL players are on Capitol Hill talking to lawmakers about a range of issues, from antitrust law to a possible work stoppage.
Union president Kevin Mawae (muh-WY’) tells The Associated Press that the players are closely watching a Supreme Court case in which the NFL wants some protection from antitrust laws.
He says a favorable ruling for league owners could affect free agency for players and help owners control ticket prices.
The Tennessee Titans’ center plans to testify about the case at a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing later Wednesday.
Mawae says the players also want lawmakers to pressure the NFL to open its financial books to the union so the two sides can “negotiate more fairly.” The current contract expires after the 2010 season.
