ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -Longtime Washington Redskins trainer Bubba Tyer, the team’s last link to the George Allen era of the 1970s, retired for the second time Friday.
Tyer has been with the Redskins for 37 seasons, including 25 as the head trainer. He initially retired in 2003 but came back a year later when coach Joe Gibbs returned to the team. Gibbs gave Tyer the title of director of sports medicine, overseeing the training staff.
Tyer, 66, first joined the staff in 1971 under Allen, served on all five of Washington’s Super Bowl teams and became the dean of NFL trainers. He was recognized as the league’s top trainer in 2000, was inducted into the Redskins’ Ring of Fame in 2003 and also served a term as president of the Pro Football Athletic Trainers Society.
“It has been a fantastic 37 seasons,” Tyer said.
