VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -Former NFL star Bruce Smith has pleaded guilty to drunken driving in Virginia.
Smith was fined $1,000 and given a 90-day suspended sentence Thursday in a plea agreement with Virginia Beach prosecutors, who dropped charges of speeding and refusal to take a breath test.
Smith said he decided it was in his best interest to “take ownership” of his mistake. Smith’s trial had been set for Thursday morning.
The 46-year-old Smith was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. In 2003, he ended a 19-year career with the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins as the NFL’s career all-time sacks leader. He played in 11 Pro Bowls.
Smith was charged after a traffic stop in May. It was his third DUI arrest. One conviction was dismissed, and he was acquitted in another case.
