LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – Brian Urlacher saw the talent and figured there should be no reason for the Chicago Bears to miss the playoffs after a four-year absence.
He was right.
The Bears will host the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in a divisional playoff game. The NFC North champions had a first-round bye last week.
A big reason for their return is the guys doing the tackling.
Not quite as ferocious as the old Monsters of the Midway, the defense has ranked among the stingiest all season after several mediocre years. Urlacher says this group is “right up there” with the one that led the Bears to the playoffs in 2005 and the Super Bowl the following season.
