Panthers Season Odds
After winning the NFC South and hosting a playoff game last season, John Fox and the Carolina Panthers look to take the next step in 2009. The Panthers are essentially in “win now” mode after extending quarterback Jake Delhomme’s contract this offseason. While some believe that Carolina should have started developing a young quarterback a season ago, the Panthers continue to believe that Delhomme will find the magic that got them to the Super Bowl in 2003. The Panthers’ running game will once again be the backbone of the offense. The duo of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart were explosive last year and carried Carolina into the playoffs. But Delhomme almost single-handedly sunk them in their divisional round game with eventual NFC champs Arizona by throwing six interceptions. Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.COM have made the Panthers 25/1 long shots to win Super Bowl XLIV. Carolina’s odds to win the NFC have been set at 9/1 and their odds to repeat as NFC South champions at 2/1. Considering the Panthers won their division last year and went to the playoffs, their 25/1 odds offer some value. They hope the additions of second rounders Everette Brown and Sherrod Martin will also boost a defense that seems on the cusp of being one of the better units in football. The key, perhaps, is how well Delhomme can perform down the stretch to get this team over the hump.
