ST. LOUIS, MO (TheSpread) – A pivotal matchup in the NFC West will take place this Sunday at the Edward Jones Dome when the St. Louis Rams put their first-place standing on the line when they host the San Francisco 49ers. Continue reading for odds, picks and more on this Week 16 matchup.
According to current NFL Week 16 odds and oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com, the Rams are 1-point favorites over the 49ers this Sunday. The current over/under total for this game is 39.5 points.
The 49ers dropped to 5-9 last week with their loss to the Chargers and are now 5-9 against the spread according to latest NFL trends. They’re 1-6 on the road this year and have failed to cover in five of those seven games.
The Rams fell to 6-8 with their home loss to the Chiefs but are still a solid 9-5 against the spread (although they’ve failed to cover in each of their last two games). They’re 4-3 at home this season, however, and have covered in four of their seven games at the Edward Jones Dome.
NFL Week 16 Free Pick:
Both teams need this game but we have more faith in the Rams at this point than the 49ers. Mike Singletary’s team is often the most unprepared on any Sunday and the Rams have played fairly well at home this year. Sam Bradford and the offense struggled last week against Kansas City but they shouldn’t have as much trouble moving the ball against a highly inconsistent San Francisco secondary. The Rams are 5-0 against the spread versus a team with a losing record and 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a favorite. They’re also 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games overall, while the 49ers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games. They’re also going back to Troy Smith, who hasn’t played in three weeks because Singletary can’t make up his mind about who he wants his quarterback to be. Our pick is the Rams –1.
