NFL Week 16 Opening Odds

nfl week 16 opening odds point spreads over under totals

(The Spread) – With just two weeks remaining in the 2011 NFL season, oddsmakers have released the point spreads for pivotal Week 16.

When the action gets kicked off on Saturday this week, in-state rivals fighting for their playoff lives will square off in East Rutherford when the Jets “host” the Giants at 1:00PM ET. The Giants’ shocking loss to the Redskins dropped them out of first place in the NFC East and out of the playoff picture entirely in the NFC, while the Jets’ crushing defeat to the Eagles has put them in a bad spot in the AFC. While they still hold a tiebreaker over the Bengals based on best win percentage in common games, Cincinnati is now tied with the Jets at 8-6. Oddsmakers have installed the Jets as 3-point favorites over the Giants this weekend.

In another pivotal NFC vs. AFC matchup with playoff implications, the Lions will host the Chargers at 4:05PM ET on Saturday. At 9-5 Detroit controls its own destiny when it comes to clinching one of the two Wild Card spots in the NFC. San Diego, on the other hand, needs to win out and receive a little help but thanks to its three-game winning streak the Chargers are still alive. The Lions have been installed as a 2.5-point favorite over the Bolts this weekend.

The Packers could essentially squash any remaining hopes the Bears still had of making the playoffs when the two NFC North rivals meet in Green Bay on Sunday night. The Bears are still mulling around the NFC playoff picture but injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte have significantly hampered their opportunities. The Packers have opened as 13-point favorites.

In perhaps the game of the week, NFC South rivals will clash in New Orleans on Monday Night Football when the Saints host the Falcons at 8:30PM ET. New Orleans can clinch the division and put pressure on Atlanta to beat Tampa Bay in the final week in order to make the playoffs as a Wild Card. If the Falcons upset the Saints, then they’ll still have a shot to win the division heading into Week 17. Oddsmakers have installed New Orleans as a 7-point home favorite for this contest.
