HOUSTON: The Texans failed to cover the spread for the first time in three weeks last Sunday when they needed overtime to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars. Houston’s 43-37 win was the team’s fourth straight and it allowed the Texans to hold onto the top spot in the AFC. Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson were magnificent, as the quarterback completed 43-of-55 passes for 527 yards and five touchdowns. Johnson racked up 14 catches for 273 yards and one touchdown, which came in overtime when Schaub found him on a 48-yard passing play. The Texans improved their record to 9-1 overall, although they’re now 7-3 against the spread after failing to cover as a 15-point home favorite. The over has hit in five of Houston’s first 10 games this season.
DETROIT: The Lions couldn’t hold onto a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter as they fell to the Packers 24-20 last Sunday. Matthew Stafford was brutal, as he completed 17-of-39 passes for 266 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Calvin Johnson did rack up 143 yards on five catches with one touchdown, and Mikel Leshoure was effective while rushing for 94 yards on 19 carries with one score. But Detroit’s offense continues to struggle with consistency and the Lions fell to 4-6 on the year. They also failed to cover as a 3.5-point underdog, and are now 4-6 against the spread in 2012. The Lions have failed to cover the number in two straight games after covering in four consecutive contests heading into Week 11. The Lions would likely have to win the remaining six games on their schedule to qualify for a playoff spot.
ODDS: According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Texans are 3-point favorites versus the Lions, while the over/under total is now sitting at 50 points. Houston is 9-1 overall and 4-0 on the road, while Detroit is 4-6 overall and 2-2 at home.
TRENDS: The Texans are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games in November and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games. The Lions, meanwhile, are 0-8 against the number in their last 8 Thursday games and 0-8 straight up in their last eight Thanksgiving Day games.
