NFL Week 11 Opening Odds
(The Spread) – The opening odds are out for Week 11 in the NFL and as usual, there are some values to be had.
Oddsmakers have more faith in the Eagles than I do. Watching them on Sunday at home against the Cardinals was like witnessing a team that clearly had given up. DeSean Jackson’s contract situation continues to be an issue and Michael Vick’s accuracy issues have cropped up again. Granted, these NFC East rivalries tend to be close games but the Giants are only laying three points after soundly beating the Eagles in Philly earlier this season. The G-Men are coming off a tough loss to the 49ers but should probably be favored by more than three at home against an Eagle team that appears ready to mail the season in. The over/under total for this game has opened at 47.5 points.
It would appear as though Chris Johnson has finally gotten his sea legs back. One week after totaling over 100 yards both receiving and rushing in a loss to the Bengals, Johnson broke out with 130 yards and a touchdown in a 30-3 victory over the Panthers on Sunday. That’s good news for a Tennessee team that is still in the thick of things in the AFC South. Meanwhile, Atlanta coach Mike Smith essentially gave the game away last Sunday to New Orleans by going for it on 4th and 1 from his own 29-yard-line in overtime. Predictably, the Falcons tried to run right up the gut and Michael Turner was stopped cold. The Saints won the game and left the Falcons searching for answers. Before looking at the line I figured that Atlanta would be right around a 4-point favorite. Instead, oddsmakers list them at –6.5, which seems a little high. The over/under total for this game is currently sitting at 44 points.
The Thursday night matchup features Rex Ryan’s Jets versus Tim Tebow’s Broncos. The Jets were stung hard by a New England team that was clearly on a mission last Sunday night. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady weren’t going to lose three games in a row, and they soundly crushed the Jets in New York. Now Ryan’s squad has to travel cross-country to play a Denver team that is 3-1 since Tebow took over under center. That said, Tebow only completed two passes in a win over the Chiefs in Week 10. He won’t be able to get away with that again this Sunday versus a stingy New York defense. Considering how poorly Tebow played against the Lions’ defense two weeks ago, there’s no telling what could happen when Ryan puts together his game plan this week. Assuming the Jets can handle playing on the road coming off a short week, 5 points seems generous given that Denver may not score.
