NYG-TB Free Pick
Two teams heading in different directions will square off at Raymond James Stadium this Sunday when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host the New York Giants.
The Giants won a thriller in Dallas on Sunday night, beating the Cowboys 33-31 on Lawrence Tynes’ last season field goal. Eli Manning threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns while receiver Mario Manningham caught 10 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. The Giants covered the 3-point spread as underdogs.
The Bucs fell to 0-2 on the year with a 33-20 loss to the Bills in Buffalo. Byron Leftwich threw for 296 yards and a three touchdowns, while Kellen Winslow hauled in seven passes for 90 yards and a score. Despite their success on offense, Tampa’s defense was shredded and the Bucs failed to cover the 4-point spread as underdogs.
Oddsmakers from online sports book BetOnline have made the Buccaneers 7-point home underdogs in their matchup with the Giants this week. The over/under total for this game has been set at 44.
While Tampa’s offense has been somewhat of a pleasant surprise scoring 41 points in their first two games, the defense has been brutal now that former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is coaching at the University of Tennessee.
The Bucs will once again have trouble slowing down the Giants, who look great despite not having the threat of a legitimate No. 1 receiver. Guys like Manningham and Steve Smith have embraced their starting roles and Manning has taken exception to his wideouts production and has gotten them the ball early and often.
Adding insult to injury, Tampa Bay lost safety Jermaine Phillips to a season-ending injury earlier this week, taking away from their already depleted secondary. Expect Manning to throw early and often against the Bucs’ beleaguered defensive backfield, leading to plenty of points.
While it’s always risky to take a road team giving up seven points, we think the Giants are a safe bet this week against a bad Tampa team that allowed 34 points to the Cowboys at Raymond James Stadium in Week 1.
We also recommend taking the under in this game considering that the total has gone under in five of Tampa Bay’s five games when playing against the Giants. The total has also gone under in five of the Bucs’ last six games when playing the Giants at home.
